One of the longest running series on television, the British series has gained a large following around the world. The show had its first run from 1963 to 1989 and was revived for another go in 2005. The main character, known only as “The Doctor”, travels through time and space to solve historical issues or help people and civilizations.
The doctor is part of an alien race called the Timelords from the planet Gallifrey. The Timelords resemble humans but have the ability to take on new forms that prevent them from ageing. This also the reason the series can run for decades on end.
The doctor typically is accompanied by someone he picked up somewhere on an adventure. These companions travel with the Doctor through time and act as assistants and a friend to him. The series features many different smaller stories as the Doctor goes on his travels in his TARDIS. The TARDIS is a time-travelling space ship disguised as a 60s police box. These were a common sight back then and a great choice for camouflage, although it is a bit unpractical for the current time. According to the Doctor, the device’s cloaking device is stuck on this appearance, but he seems to secretly enjoy the appearance.
Mulder and Scully are two FBI special agents that look into some of the strangest cases we can imagine. Mulder is an FBI profiler and Scully is a medical doctor, who is a bit sceptical about the paranormal. Mulder, on the other hand, is a strong believer and has been ever since aliens abducted his sister, according to him. The abduction drives Mulder throughout the seasons as he tries to find out what happened to her.
Aliens aren’t the only foreign creatures the pair encounter. Throughout the series they meet some other creatures only mentioned in legends. During the series, Mulder and Scully try to expose that the government is hiding their awareness of Aliens to the world and even working together with them. The X-Files is a classic sci-fi series that does a great job combining drama, thriller, fantasy and horror.

Stranger Things
The youngest on the list with the first of two seasons released in 2016. In just the two seasons the series has become one of the best sci-fi shows around today. One of Netflix’s home run hits, Stranger Things proved to us that Netflix knows what they are doing when it comes to sci-fi. The series takes place in the 1980s in a small American town where nothing special happens in general. On the outskirts of the town is a secret testing facility that experiments with interdimensional travel. In the sci-fi tradition, some of the experiments go bad and invisible creatures are released in the town.
The story focusses on a group of young nerds that befriend a girl, that has some telekinetic powers, who escaped from the secret testing facility. The series gives off a nice nostalgic feel and executes a well set up story.

Futurama
Bringing animation and sitcom in under the sci-fi label is the well-known show from Fox. The show takes place in the year 2999 when a pizza delivery boy wakes up in a cryogenic pod after being frozen for 999 years. The delivery boy named Fry befriends a group of misfits and an arrogant bending robot. Together they go on all sorts of adventures that seem to parody older sci-fi series and films.
Futurama blends the different genres perfectly and provides more than enough entertainment.
Rick and Morty
The family is dysfunctional, Rick is narcissistic and he sees himself as a living god. The parents are stuck in a failing marriage. Morty is failing school subjects thanks to his constant adventures with Rick. The humour of the series tends to be a bit dark, but the series is excellent in imploying satire as a comedic weapon. Rick and Morty have become a part of pop culture and will be remembered for years to come.
