Time to dwell on the past for a bit. These are the best old Cartoon Network shows that kept us out of our parents’ hair on weekend mornings. Remember these shows and characters?
People born in the early 90s to people born in the middle 00s can identify the gap in their generations by comparing what shows were on Cartoon Network when they were younger. Thus, a debate has erupted comparing the old and new Cartoon Network and the quality of the shows that are on the air now and back then. I’m not one for these types of debates, I’m just here to reminisce about how I wasted my Saturday mornings when I was a child.
Most of Cartoon Network’s classic shows kicked off in the late 90s. The quality of shows just increased with Cartoon Network in the 2000s. Where can I start when it comes to old Cartoon Network shows? Below is a list of classic Cartoon Network shows from the old days.
Scooby Doo
The original series was showcased on the channel for a reasonably long period. What child doesn’t find a talking dog entertaining? The show cemented my love for cartoons and changed my world, as I’m sure it did for countless other children. Scooby Doo is a talking Great Dane that belongs to a group of friends who drive around in a van dubbed the Mystery Van. The group travel across the USA, solving mysteries that usually involve a monster that turns out to be a man in a costume. Scooby Doo keeps you guessing on who is going to be behind the scheme because your guess is usually wrong and it’s the guy that had 2.1 seconds of screen time in the beginning.
Cow and chicken
Cartoon Network has always been known for being weird. Cow and Chicken is one weird concept. The story joins a chicken and cow that happens to be brother and sister with human parents. They are constantly getting into trouble and are sometimes accompanied by a devilish being that promotes the extreme weirdness of the show.
Courage the Cowardly Dog
This show is one that gave me nightmares when I was 5 years old. Courage is a dog who lives in the middle of Nowhere (the town’s actual name). In Nowhere some freaky stuff tends to go down. The events range from strange creatures that take up residence in the house to family members obsessed with cutting hair that visits after being released from a mental asylum. Courage tends to go on some crazy strange adventures for a dog owned by an elderly couple.
Edd, Edd and Eddy
The similarly named teenagers spend their days in the culdesac, dreaming up business plans and hustling the other kids of the neighbourhood in order to make some money. The motivation behind the schemes is a deeply embedded craving for basketball sized jawbreakers, that they shove into their mouths as soon as they lay their hands on it. In between their out of these world business ideas the three friends experience the everyday life of kids their age.
Megas XLR
Transformers meets Pacific Rim in an all-time classic Cartoon Network show. What happens when an overweight trailer park slacker and his goth styled friend find a huge battle robot in a scrapyard? This amazing show happens, that’s what. Coop is a mechanic that finds Megas (the robot) in a junkyard. Afterwards, Coop mounts a muscle car on the top to act as a cockpit. From within this car Coop can control Megas. Megas is utilized as Coop’s everyday vehicle, he goes around the city running errands and from time to time engages in large robot battles against his, Davy Jones look alike, arch nemesis.
Codename: Kids Next Door
KND is a worldwide secret agency, the series showcases sector V of the agency. Operating out of a tree house the five ten-year-olds battle evil adults, teenagers and other children. They fight to better the lives of children everywhere and protect them from evils like homework, flossing and broccoli.
Dexter’s Laboratory
Released in 1996, Dexter’s Laboratory is Cartoon Network’s first cartoon series. A boy genius has a secret Lab hidden in his room. Unknown to his parents, Dexter creates some insane inventions in there that usually goes south when his sister Dee Dee enters and starts messing around.
Johnny Bravo
An overconfident, appearance-obsessed, blonde, male that still lives with his mother is the protagonist in this cartoon comedy. Johnny Bravo is a masculine momma’s boy that spends episodes trying to get women to date him, although he is usually unsuccessful.
Time Squad
Time Cops travel into the past attempting to keep history in line. Buck Tudrussel is the commanding officer of a space station orbiting future earth. The planet has united into one nation and peace resides everywhere. Larry 3000 is a diplomatic robot and translator that became obsolete after the world merged. Otto is a 21st-century orphan, recruited into the Time Squad, who seems to be the only competent member that knows how to solve problems. Even though he is ignored most of the time.
Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends
The home where all the imaginary friends go after their friends abandoned them. Growing up means that people have to do away with childish things like imaginary friends. But what happens to them once you ask them to leave. They end up in Foster’s home for Imaginary Friends. Here they are cared for and put up for adoption. Children that lack the imagination to create an imaginary friend has the option to adopt one from Foster’s. In this show, we can see what life is like in an imaginary friend orphanage.
Samurai Jack
After an epic battle between a prince and an evil spirit named Aku, the prince was shot into the future where the Shape Shifting Demon rules. Now, the prince nicknamed “Jack” finds himself in strange places that require his help. Doing his best to uphold the Samurai spirit and his honour, he sees an entirely different world and encounters many fascinating people. During this time Jack travels in search of Aku awaiting their next encounter that will give him an opportunity to slay the demon once and for all.
